Drew's Guitar Birthday Cake

My Drew is now a year into his second decade... Saying it that way makes him sound a lot older!  Drew turned 11 on Saturday.  He wanted a guitar cake.  I procrastinated in getting started so I didn't get to do as much with the decorating as I had planned.  Looks like another guitar cake is in my future.

Angry Birds Cake

I was contacted recently by a fellow Minnesotan transplanted in Bermuda.  She was interested in having an Angry Birds cake made for her son's birthday party.  She sent me a picture of a cake she found online and wanted the same cake.  I don't like to copy cakes others have made but I liked this one so much, I couldn't resist!

Now I want to make some cupcakes with the other "characters."  Looks like another Angry Birds cake is in my near future.

Owl birthday cake

My friend Mae's daughter, Emily, turned 14 today.  She selected a balloon for the decorations and wanted a cake to compliment it.  I was excited to make an owl cake.  My Nana loved owls and I thought fondly of her as I made this cake for Emily.  I think I will make it again and make some tweeks.

The balloon:

This is how it was displayed at the party:

40th Birthday party cake

I made this cake and matching cupcakes for a big 40th birthday party.  The "birthday girl" is a friend of a friend (and I have never met her) so I am honored that she put her trust in me to make the cake for her special occasion.  The only specifications were that it have black and gold, but not too much black, and that it have "40" on it.

This is how I set up the display at the party:

Princess Merida cake (from Disney's BRAVE)

Princess Merida was for Melissa. She turned 8 in February but waited until now to have her party. She came over and told me exactly how she wanted it. She was very specific about the placement of Princess Merida's face and her hair.

Cake with kitten for Sarah's 8th birthday

This cake was for Sarah. She was very specific about what she wanted. An orange cat hiding in a flower garden with it's paw on a ball. I'm calling this one "Sarah's cake take 2" because it is the second one I made for her. The first one was half eaten by Molly, my friend Laura's dog that we are dog-sitting. (It was my fault... I left it where she could reach it.) This cake is better than the first one so everyone is happy in the end!

Henna tattoo inspired cake

I have always liked the intricate art of henna tattoos.  When I had a blank cake and didn't know what to do with it, I decided to try my piping at some henna art.  I want to do this again because it didn't turn out as well as I had expected.  My arthritis was really bad that day and as a result, my hands weren't very steady.  It's still cool though.

Victoria's Secret inspired cake

Velda asked for a 2-tier Victoria's Secret inspired cake for a friend of Juliana's.  I have been thinking about putting ruffles on a cake and decided this was the perfect time! While the cake was lots of fun, it was a very frustrating project for me!  Last night when I had my cakes ready to go in the oven, I opened up my pre-heated oven to find it not nearly hot enough to bake a cake.  I waited more than an hour and still no hotter than 200 degrees.  So I turned on the wall oven.  It was hot in less than 5 min.  Yay!!!  However, when I went to take the cake out, the door wouldn't come open.  We ended up breaking the spring on the door to get it open.... So now there isn't a working oven at my house... :-(
Fortunately, I will have a new one tomorrow!  :-)

King of the Jungle Cake and Safari Animal cupcakes

Amanda, a lady that Kyle works with, asked if I could make a cake and cupcakes for her son Chavi's second birthday party.  She needed a small cake and 50 cupcakes using primarily butter cream icing for all the decorations.  I was nervous because I almost never do all buttercream! I ended up using fondant to make a lion on top and everything else is buttercream icing with some m&m's for fun. I also loaned her my cupcake stand and decorated it with a jungle theme.

I love how this little lion turned out! So cute!

Designer inspired cupcakes: Chanel, Fendi, Tiffany's, Victoria's Secret, Burberry

For Juliana's 18th birthday, Velda asked for some special designer cupcakes.  I was excited to make these because they looked like a lot of fun! And they were! The Victoria's Secret, Fendi and Burberry tops were hand painted. The background on the Chanel tops are "quilted," which looks really neat.  Too bad I couldn't get a good picture of it! The Fendi tops took a loooooong time to paint. It was worth all the time! Juliana loved them!

Ladybug cupcakes for Devin

Stacey's daughter Devin asked for ladybug cupcakes.  When I asked her what she wanted, I was certain she would ask for something Harry Potter.  I was very surprised at her choice.

Happy Birthday Sam!!! Spiderman cookies...

I feel so lucky that in Bermuda we are allowed to cook treats at home and send them with the kids to school!!!  Most moms send cupcakes with their kids on their birthday.  These cupcakes are often distributed to the kids at the end of the day, on the way out the door.  I can't tell you how many times I have driven through to collect the boys and they are holding a sticky cupcake in their hands, ready to get into the car and devour it...  Obviously, I don't have anything against cupcakes.  I love them!  However, I don't love them smeared all over the backseat of my car.  For Sam's birthday this year, I decided to make cookies instead.  A nice, dry treat that will only produce crumbs...  He is really into SpiderMan right now and wanted Spidey cookies.

So I spent half the night making 31 Spidey cookies.  He liked them so much, he asked for another batch to be made this weekend... He asked so sweetly, how could I possibly say "no?"

Camouflage cake

My latest challenge was to make a camoflage cake... Inside and out.  I don't have a picture of the indside yet, but this is how the camo fondant turned out.  It wasn't as difficult as I had anticipated.

Kyle's 40th birthday cake: Boba Fett

Every time someone wants a Star Wars themed cake, Kyle suggests I make a Boba Fett cake like on ehe saw online.  So for his big day this year, I made the cake for him.

Our neighbor's daughter, Mackenzie, turned 11 this year.  The horse on the cake is meant to look like her pony Mimi.

Sonic the Hedgehog cake for Asher

Asher's mom, Terri, asked if I would make a "Sonic" cake for Asher's party this weekend.  I agreed, even though I didn't yet knw who Sonic is.  I had to start doing research to figure out who he is.  This is my cake rendition.

Happy Birthday Ana!!! Princess cake

Kyle's brother, Derek, brought his family to Bermuda to visit us.  My niece, Ana, celebrated her 7th birthday earlier this month and we wanted to have a little cake "party" for her.  She wanted a pink princess cake like another I made a couple of years ago.  Here's her cake!

Cupcake Wars...

Kyle's company hosted a "cupcake wars" in June.  The theme for the cupcakes was "cocktail."  We entered these "White Russian" cupcakes.  They were soooo yummy!  We won!  The prize was a certificate to the cookery store in town!  Woo Hoo!

And another birthday cake:

Louis Vuitton Handbag cake

I made this cake back in April and I thought I lost the photo... Sooo glad I found it!  This was the first time I had "embossed" on fondant.  It was an interesting experience!!

Captain America Cake

My Drew turned 10 on Friday.  For his birthday, I made a Captain America cake.  Kyle showed me a picture of one like it and I just had to try it...  Drew loved it!

Inside, I layered the cake to look like the American flag when it was cut...

And no party is complete without a goofy picture of the Birthday Boy!!!

Chieko's wedding cake...

I did a wedding cake for a destination-style wedding.  It was a morning ceremony on the beach.  The bride, Chieko, wanted hibiscus flowers on her cake.  She designed it herself and I put it to cake!  The flowers were much easier to make than I had thought they would be.  Time-consuming, though!

Puppy shower cake...

My dear friend Deidre is having a boy!  She has decorated her nursery with the cutest puppy theme!  So for her shower, I made a fondant puppy for the top of her cake.

In addition to the centerpiece cake, I made these little matching cupcakes for each place setting at the table.

A recent wedding cake for a formal and rather elegant wedding.

Thank you cake for Bobby...

This cake was for a gentleman at our church who has spent many, many hours over the years "taking care of stuff..."  I can find it difficult making cakes for men.  I always have lots of cute ideas that are almost all better suited for girls and women.   In order to have enough cake to serve everyone at church, I made cupcakes to coordinate.

Jersey cake...

A replica of a soccer team jersey.  Velda requested this cake as a surprise for her brother's birthday.  This is his favorite team.

I found pictures of the jersey online and tried to do all of the details...
